Many of you know that we're still struggling to get Liam potty trained. He'll go through many of the motions, but just won't go in the potty - he also doesn't seem to care whether its pull ups or underwear, dry or wet, the sensation doesn't bother him as much as the act of sitting on or standing beside the potty, so I've started to enlist the help of The Magic Bowl: Potty Training Made Easy.
What I love about this DVD is that it walks Liam through all of the steps in going potty and reinforces the routine that his teacher and I have started to use. Since watching the DVD, Liam has made strides in telling us when he wants to go pee pee in the potty, and has even gotten a few drops to go, but he's still got some fears and anxieties over sitting on the potty.
What I like about this DVD is that it engages children in both the music and the action of using a toilet or potty chair and reinforces that this action is 'grown up' and 'important'. For typically developing children, there are lots of great ideas to help reinforce good potty behavior, but unfortunately for my son with Autism, we're still struggling to put it all together. He's started memorizing and singing the songs though, so I hope with repetition that we'll see progress!
Now that the weather is getting warmer, I hope to redouble our efforts in getting Liam daytime trained... I'm sure that with the other strides he's making in language, particularly receptive language, that his ability to comprehend and see the value of going in the potty will come to fruition.
Even though we're not there yet, I think that The Magic Bowl: Potty Training Made Easy is a great resource for all parents who are introducing the potty to their children and I also really like the potty training tips and FAQ sections of the Magic Bowl website. You can also check out a clip of the DVD on their site too!
At only $14.95, The Magic Bowl: Potty Training Made Easy is a great resource for first time or even experienced parents who are trying to introduce the potty to their children.
I plan to continue to update you on the progress we make as a family in getting Liam potty trained, since it's such a big goal for both school and home, and I'm sure that The Magic Bowl: Potty Training Made Easy is going to help provide the breakthrough we need!
