Book Review: Something Witchy This Way Comes by Veronica Blade

I am pleased to be another stop on Veronica Blade's virtual tour with Pump Up Your Book.  If you missed her Guest Post you can check it out by clicking here.  So let's talk about Something Witchy This Way Comes:

From the Publisher:
Brainiac Tessa McClean’s newly discovered magical powers give her hope of an escape from her inadequate life. But the thrill of being a witch fades when she learns of a rival coven and begins to suspect her own coven’s objective. Evidence tells Tessa to trust one side, but instinct drives her toward the other.
When Hayden Anders, the most delinquent kid in school — and the toughest — offers self-defense lessons in exchange for tutoring, the timing couldn’t be better. Though the idea of hanging out with a bad-boy thattempting is unnerving, staying alive amidst warring witches takes priority. She vows to hold onto her values and not surrender to the bad-boy she begins to secretly want.
Together, Tessa and Hayden uncover the truth about the two factions — a truth that explains why the covens will stop at nothing to lure her to their side. Tessa has only a matter of weeks to form an alliance with one coven or the other, but the wrong decision could cost Tessa the lives of all those she loves — including Hayden.
My Review:
I don't usually read YA Paranormal Romance books, I usually leave them for my daughter to help me review, but this book came in while she was having an incredibly busy time at school and couldn't commit to reading it in time for the review, so I cracked it open.  I'm so glad that I did.  Something Witchy This Way Comes is a book that brings all of the elements together - romance, mystery, suspense.
One of the things I like most about this book is that the main character is not a wimp.  Tessa's character, while developing throughout the book, doesn't fall in to the damsel in distress scenario that often haunts YA stories.  She has issues - a difficult home life, dealing with changes and learning about herself and becoming self-reliant, but she doesn't rely on others to 'save' her.  She thinks for herself and makes her own decisions, based on what she knows, sees and most importantly, feels!  This book takes Twilight and others like it to the next level!  The story, while having a paranormal line, is really a good suspenseful drama that has all the right elements for keeping my attention.
Whether you are a YA reader or not, I think you will find this story engaging and one of those books you just don't want to put down!
