Friday Fragments...

We have a mystery this week... Liam is really resisting getting on the school bus and because of his Autism we can't figure out why... that's the most frustrating thing about this disability... the guesswork and detective work required to help him be happy and healthy... I phoned his teacher hoping for some insight, but she says he's been happy once he gets to school...

Please keep my sanity and Wayne's in your thoughts today as we host a sleepover for several of Robyn's friends to mark the occasion of her 14th birthday... I anticipate lots of giggles, talking and off-key singing... and that's just us getting ready for the party ;-D

Erik is learning to jump... it's a funny process that I'd forgotten about when Liam learned... but oh so cute to watch as he figures out the rhythm of jumping on the bed... I see a trip to Monkey Joes (home of several bouncy castles) in our future...  of course he's also learning to jump into puddles...

Wayne's sabbatical is filling up fast... I am still amazed by the fact that he truly thought he'd be getting a 5 month break... if you know my husband at all, you'll know that he can't resist a challenge or say no to an opportunity that presents itself... he'll be busy, just not in the classroom... and hopefully enjoy every minute of it...

As for me, I'm putting together my last book fair for Haut Gap... I think I'm going out with a bang.. the theme is Hawaiian Luau and I've been stalking the Oriental Trading Company website trying to decide how much fabulous decor I can budget for ....

In other fragments, I have a pet peeve with the grade 8 graduation committee at Robyn's school this year... they've decided that the girls should wear pastel colors ... have they looked at this year's fashion options??? COLOR is in!  None of the major stores are even showing pastel options online... I did find two really cute white dresses... white is close to pastel right?

I'm still looking for 3 or 4 more volunteers to write a guest post in May or June about 3-5 things to do in your area when travelling (or staycationing) with kids... if you're interested please let me know... and if you want to highlight a city other than the one  you live in, that's fine too!

In the news this week (and still rolling around in my fragmented mind):

Congratulations to the team at the North Charleston Boeing plant - the first plane made in SC rolls off the line today - http://www.postandcourier.com/article/20120427/PC16/120429299/1005.  One of my good friend's hubby's fingerprints are all over the plane so I wish it long service...

And yet another example of some people having way too much time and way too little sense... Yertle the Turtle by Dr. Seuss is now 'too political' for British Columbia classrooms... I hope they don't read the Butter Battle Book... http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/british-columbia/dr-seusss-yertle-the-turtle-deemed-too-political-for-bc-classroom/article2413233/

Well, there's more rattling around in my brain, but it's so fragmented it doesn't make any sense... so I'll turn you lovely readers over to the much more capably fragmented hands of Mrs. 4444 and the other fraggers:
Mommy's Idea

P.S. Every time I've written the word frag(ment) today my brain starts singing... "Down at Fraggle Rock..." so I guess I should pull up the Youtube clip so you can be as strange as me...

I don't know where your son is on the Autistic spectrum, my son is 15 and has been dealing with aspergers geesh since he was born almost. Does he go to school on a regular bus or a special ed bus? It's could be the bus is to noise, or it could be a simple as the door opening if it makes a strange noise it could set him off.
My suggestion is to see what the school thinks of you going with him on the bus once and watching his reactions, That might be the best way to figure it out

He loves the school bus... today was much better than the rest of the week, so I'm hoping it's just a phase he was going through... he is on the special ed bus and has LOVED it up until the past two weeks... still asking questions about what has changed... and if there is anything we can do to support him...
If what Sally said is true, maybe you could get your son some earplugs to wear on the bus. Good luck figuring out what the problem is. Hope you can solve it quickly!

I wish he'd wear earplugs or noise cancelling headphones... but he won't put anything on his head because of his sensor issues... but it's a great suggestion ;-)
Oh I used to LOVE Fraggle Rock!!! Awesome.

I wanted to say that I feel your frustration about the bus, We too have been struggling with R not wanting to get on the bus lately. She already doesn't ride the bus home from school because we spent too long trying to work it out and they finally said that if she rides in the afternoon she MUST be in a restrictive harness (not a 5 point like a car seat, but one that looks like a parachute harness and it clips to a belt from behind)
I wouldn't allow that so now I pick her up. The mornings were always fine, but all this week she's been more resistant and it's been a struggle to get her to sit and buckle in. While R is quite verbal, she can't quite express why she's feeling what she's feeling.
Does your bus have a video camera on it? If so, you can request a copy of the morning tapes to help you get an idea of what may be happening to cause his anxiety. I watched numerous tapes of afternoon rides trying to work with the Behavioral specialist to come up with a solution.
It could be a new student on the bus, could be that someone that sits near him has been using different shampoo or soap that is not pleasant to him, or even the driver or aide using a different perfume or something...
Your right though, that can be some of the most challenging aspects of ASD. It's certainly one I have a hard time with.

Sometimes even us adults find it difficult to express our fear and anxiety.
I'm trying this again because of my feed. Nice meeting you Heather and your lovely family.

Many children, not just autistic children, have bus issues. Is it separation anxiety? Is it the fear of the unknown? I am attempting to suggest other things since noise is what everyone else seems to conclude is the issue. Does he have something to occupy his mind on the bus? Or his hands? In some fashion, I think he needs a reason to want to ride the bus, something tangible. And sleep overs? Yikes!

I hope it isn't a case of bullying. :/ Have you tried talking to the bus drivers?

I hope it all becomes clear with the school bus dilemma!! You never know. As for the sleepover...whoa. I remember those days/nights. And Erik...what an adorable image. Oh, and before I forget, hope your daughter has a terrific birthday.

Any chance the bus driver has noticed anything different going on on the bus the past couple of weeks?
I'm 63 and still think it's fun to jump in puddles. I have stopped jumping on my bed, tho.

We have a mystery this week... Liam is really resisting getting on the school bu...No mystery,i dont have autism and i didnt like getting on the bus either...it is completly normal as far as im concerned.
"too political" children's books? I thought children's books were pretty much all political or religious at the core. or anyway, you can read one, the other or both into them. Those are major realities in life, that you can both put and find views in just about anything. If the government protects kids from too much, they'll grow up in for a big surprise about the real world Yeesh!

Happy birthday to Robyn! I hope all went loud and giggly well.with her sleep over!
