An interview with Avery Flynn, author of Passion Creek

Thank you so much for having me over at your place today!

You have the best story idea ever thought up, but you’re stuck in on an airplane with no access to paper, your phone or any electrical devices. What do you do next?

I am so not afraid of talking to strangers, so option one is to turn to my poor neighbor and beg a pen and paper. No one is sitting next to me? The next option is getting to the bathroom and snagging some of that oh-so-soft *sarcasm* toilet paper. Since I never leave home without lipstick or black eyeliner, I’d use that to scratch out the plot.

What five things do you find most annoying in yourself?

Wait, let me go ask my kids because they will tell me without even having to think about it. .... OK, I’m back, here’s what they said:
1.  Insistence on going to bed exactly at bed time.
2.  Refusal to provide dessert unless the dinner plate is empty.
3.  The fact that I dance in the middle of the grocery story when a good song comes on.
4.  Laughing loudly in public.
5.  The fact that the hubby and I kiss in the kitchen while making dinner.

Who was the first person you loved?

Jeremy Carr in sixth grade. My first boyfriend. My first French kiss. My first puppy love. :)

What makes you a good author?

I love what I do. If you don’t have the passion for writing, it’s always going to be a painful, sometimes lonely, endeavor. But I love getting to make up stories about people who are on the biggest adventure there is in this world - falling in love. Now I don’t know if this means I’m a damn good author, but I hope that means I working toward that goal.

If you could invite 4 people (real or fictional, living or dead) to a dinner party, who would you invite and what would you serve?

That is a great question. My God, there are so many options but at this split second in time here's who I go with: Scarlett O'Hara, Mame Dennis, Dorothy Parker and Glenda Layton. We'd serve Glenda's spicy macaroni and cheese (of course) with plenty of wine.

Tell us a little about Passion Creek.

Gladly! Uptight history professor Sam Layton may have the abs of a movie action hero, but he stopped
believing in the joy of adventure a long time ago. However, when a one-night stand with a tattooed bombshell leads to a treasure map for the long-buried Rebecca’s Bounty, the call to action is too strong to ignore.

All Las Vegas cocktail waitress Josie Winarsky wants to do is paint. But when she lands smack dab in the middle in a mob plot, she has to push aside her dreams to find a treasure in Dry Creek,
Nebraska and save her family from harm. With Sam at her side and a Vegas loan shark on her tail, the treasure she finds turn out to be much more valuable than emeralds and rubies.

It's always so much fun to get to know the authors more in depth and see them as people and not just a name on a book cover!

There are days when my husband might disagree with you. :)

Sounds like a fun story! My kids would agree with the kissing while making dinner thing LOL. Each time they roll their eyes or make a sarcastic comment, I tell them that they are very lucky to have 2 parents who love each other so much. So many kids aren't so lucky. That usually shuts them up :)

Good to know I didn't scare you off. :)
Ooo, this book sounds really good. I'll have to check it out--especially because the author dances in the middle of a store--that's my kinda girl!

Oh another person who has to electric slide when the mood hits. Emily we must shop at the same store sometime. A double dance would make my kids heads explode. :)

Really cool interview! Fun! :) When did you know you wanted to be an author? I know I love writing and always wanted to write a book, but there's knowing and then doing!

I know exactly what you mean. I know I love how I feel after I run but there's still the awful part of having to actually run. Yuck. :) I've always wanted to be a writer. I worked as a newspaper reporter and in magazines for years before I wrote my first book. I took that first book in stages. I don't know about anyone else but the idea of having to write 50,000 to 100,000 words freaks me out. So I concentrated on just getting the first chapter done. Then it was finishing the first half. I still remember hitting 30,000 words and feeling like I'd climbed a mountain. The hardest part for me is still writing the last chapter. I hate saying goodbye to the characters that seem so real to me by the end. Of course, I hate reading the last chapter as a reader too. I'm just weird that way. :)

What a wonderful interview. I love to get to know the authors more closely. I even like to meet them. Your poor hubby is going to need you even more now that hockey is being cancelled. Keep up the kitchen kissing. I am sorry I can't read your book since I am still live in a paper world.
Very interesting interview! It is always good to learn about an author.
She sounds like a fun gal! I'm working on my first book and have a gazillion ideas in my heard for future books.. it's just finding the time for it all!
