Banned Books Week - In support of Freedom to choose!

I am participating for the first time in Create With Joy's Friendship Friday - nice to meet all of the people who are finding Acting Balanced for the first time!  I hope it's not your last visit!

Now on to the topic at hand - Banned Books

Whenever I hear that someone wants to make a choice about what others can or cannot read it disturbs me in ways that run deeper than a lot of injustices... just last year, here in Charleston, a parent tried to have a book removed from the curriculum and school libraries - and you can read my synopsis and response here

but for me, it all boils down to this quote by the great Dr. Martin Luther King:
“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically... Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.”
In writing, publishing and sharing multiple world views we provoke discussion, emotion and thought - taking away choice to see the whole world rather than just a piece of it can be a breeding ground for fear, bullying, tyranny and worse...

Critical thinking skills are one's most valuable resource and we should be nurturing children and adults to develop theirs rather than blindly choosing a path because it might disturb them or make them rethink their position.

OH I hate "banned book". Honestly, who is to say what book is appropriate or not for someone except that someone. In our community there are some people that if they had their way would ban Harry Potty and Lord of the Rings for being "satanic"REALLY? I love those books. Others have been banned like Hunger Games. Wow guess people can't learn about how important a free government is.

I'm sorry, I don't like the idea of anyone telling me I'm not allowed to read a book because it has something in it that they "BELIEVE" is against a moral code. I'm sorry....that's not for you to decide what is right and wrong for EVERYONE else. I can understand limited teenagers and children on the types of books that are carried in a public school, or what is REQUIRED reading in a public school, because really I don't want my kids being FORCED to read a book we don't think is appropriate. But to come out and say, "that book is banned...no one can have access to it" is wrong.

I totally understand that inappropriate books should not be easily accessible to children such as a library situation. But to ban them completely doesn't sit well with me.

I hate the idea of banning books. I agree some books should not be easily accessed by kids of course, but I don't believe in banning books. If a book is about something you don't like or believe in, just don't read it. ;)

I hate the idea of banning books as well. We are all adult enough to know what books we want to read or not. Plus I should have the power to decide what my children can read or not. Some books should require a little more "hoops" to get but it's still my choice.

It is such a touchy subject as I have always agreed that "banning books" is crazy, but now I have to say that when I hear about some books my 15-YO can get from school or chooses to read I am in awe... makes me cringe... just so on the fence...
You nailed it here! "Critical thinking skills are one's most valuable resource and we should be nurturing children and adults to develop theirs rather than blindly choosing a path because it might disturb them or make them rethink their position" - I agree!
