My Daughter Is Not A Slut - #Halloween Costume Shopping #RANT

Halloween has become big in our house this year... Liam is finally getting into the spirit of holidays and understanding that we do special things on special days, Erik is totally into dressing up - as long as there's a hat involved and Robyn has always been a big fan of the festivities... there is one rather large issue that has come to a head this year... and that's the fact that Robyn is now an adult size for costumes...

Wayne took her to the Halloween Spirit store after school yesterday and the only conclusion she could draw is that everyone who is going to dress up for Halloween from that store is going to look like a slut ... Almost every costume was a 'sexy' or 'naughty' one - with a skirt that barely covered anything and a top that was so low cut it needed a second zip code for the flesh it showed... Even looking online was not any better... costumes either covered you up completely like a giant sack or covered so little that everything hangs out...

Where's the happy medium - something fun, festive and appropriate to wear to school, a Halloween party or two and taking her brothers trick or treating door to door?   I didn't want to have to make her costume this year, but luckily I've got enough time to pull something together...

This rant is a plea... for those of you who design costumes for 'adults' please remember that some of your customers are teenage girls who may not want to let it all hang out... and some of us are their moms who SHOULDN'T let it all hang out...

I agree. My daughter had the same problem when she was still dressing up. We resorted to trying to think of easy and cheap costumes.
It is hard for kids these days!! It is cold outside too! Great for standing up for a great cause and problem!

I AGREE! I'm having to MAKE their costumes because of all these horrible freaking costumes!! UGH.

I could not agree with you more. I have been stunned the past few years by what the middle school kids are wearing!
Agreed! I felt this way when we sized out of the adorable little Healthtex sherbet colored clothes to the "oh my gosh!" size 7-14 section. Why weren't there cute clothes that didn't make my 7 year old look like a tramp? Yikes.
Glad you are able to make something more fun and appropriate for your daughter!

I totally agree!!!!
I agree! This is one reason I have stopped dressing up as an adult myself. I just find some festive shirts. I don't have girls but I totally understand.

I never really dressed up for halloween. And I agree with you all, what's the need to look sluty? Is that supposed to be attractive? Am I missing something?
Couldn't agree more...why does fun have to be sexy? Last year my daughter was a cowgirl...but we definitely need to be imaginative and a little more do it yourself!

AMEN!!! And there are almost NO superhero adult costumes that aren't slutty...just sayin!

I"ve noticed this even with the costumes for very young girls!
Preach it! My teen daughter is trying to find anime costumes and THEY ALL are really short. She's like "Mom, I like this costume, but it's so short" Wish there were more costumes that realize our daughters don't want to dress like that. Sigh

It is not just the adult costumes it is also the costumes for the tween girls. Seriously it is ridiculous. And even for the little girls if they don't want to be a princess the costume choices are pretty silly and stupid. My 6 year old wants to be a clown and we did see the cutest costume several weeks ago and of course I didn't buy it then. Now no one seems to have a girl clown costume! What is that about?

Good luck on putting together a costume
I agree with you, but you have the last word on what your daughter can wear.
Amen! But how are you going to get our point across to manufacturers of clothing for our children? I am so happy that I don't have young children any longer. I look at baby clothes, and they even look slutty. Companies are just itching to sexualize our children. I am appalled at what our children wear--clothes and super high heels that only a street prostitute would wear when I was young - or - for a boy--pants that are coming off! Disgusting. This goes far beyond just Halloween costumes, but to everyday clothing. I am so happy that I home schooled my children and brought them up believing in modesty in dress. Do you know how hard it is for them to find clothes that are modest? What is so sad is that my mother and grandmother will ridicule them about their clothing choices because they are so hard to shop for.

I totally agree! My daughter is only 3 so we're not quite there yet (though I have also seen a few costumes in her size that are not what I'd call appropriate) but I'm dreading the day when her options go from sweet to slutty. I've 'made' her costumes every year (where 'made' = pulled a costume together using normal clothes and some fancy accessories) and will probably have to keep doing it for so many years to come.
I'm not even looking forward to the day my daughter doesn't fit into kids sizes anymore. She's getting close, actually. Although, she's started thinking outside the box, and may go as Maranda Lambert this year, which consists of her own clothing. In past years, she's pretty much always gone as something scary. I think she'll probably be picking out men's costumes and girl'ing them up lol! I do agree that a lot of costumes are more for bedroom play than trick or treat. What a sad world ;(
This is something that's been bugging me for awhile now. Last year was the first year I had a little girl to shop for a costume for. I was FLOORED to see KIDS COSTUMES with names like sexy princess or hot witch. Why??? It's bad enough when the costumes are inappropriate - but to even NAME then that way, on purpose, just boggles my mind.

Totally agree. The costumes on the market now are way too suggestive. I've even seen some for little girls that in my opinion are not appropriate for that age range. I'm guessing people are actually buying these things though, so the manufacturers continue to make them.

Heather - don't waste money on store bought costumes. Have her think about what she wants to be and head to Goodwill. Half the fun of dressing up is being creative.
WOW! I don't look forward to having to deal with costumes as my kiddos get older. My daughter is 6 this year and she wants to be Mary for Halloween (so I think I'm good!).

Thank goodness my daughter is not that developed yet!!! She would have nothing to hang out LOL ~ Sorry you couldn't find something good.
Ugh, I don't even want to think about dealing with this when my daughter is that age. Although we have many years until that happens. It reminds me of that movie Mean Girls!

" In the regular world, Halloween is when children dress up in costumes and beg for candy. In Girl World, Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it."

I agree with you on this! My daughter is at an in between size so it's hard to find a little girls in her size, nor is she interested in the cutesy stuff-never has been. But I REFUSE to have her dress slutty. Even vampires seem to show off their booty or their cleavage (not that my daughter has any). It's just so frustraiting

My husband's cousin has the same problem with her 9 year old girl. She's the size of an adult and only has slutty costumes at her fingertips. It really sucks. She is dressing up as Jessie from Toy Story and they were able to find a bunch of mish-mash pieces at Goodwill for a grande total of $5. Her costume looks wonderful, AND age appropriate. Good luck, Mama!

My 13 yr old went thru this same thing this year...she hated how all of those costumes looked...and even scoured the boys section to see if maybe there was something appropriate there, but that wouldn't look too 'boy' oriented. It's so hard...and I wonder if that's really what costume designers and society think about our young women. So sad!
